The Biggest Risk in Software Today Isn’t AI. It’s Developers Forgetting How to Think.

The Biggest Risk in Software Today Isn’t AI. It’s Developers Forgetting How to Think.

Artificial Intelligence is changing software development faster than anything we’ve seen in the last decade.

Every week brings a new model, a new coding assistant, or another productivity tool promising to make developers faster than ever.

As the founder of a growing software company, I find this exciting—but also a little concerning.

The real question isn’t whether AI will replace developers.

The real question is whether developers are slowly replacing their own thinking with AI.

We’re Living Through an Unusual Moment

Today, AI feels almost unlimited.

Developers generate thousands of lines of code within minutes. Documentation appears instantly. Complex functions are created with a simple prompt.

But history tells us one thing.

Technology pricing changes.

Cloud infrastructure became more expensive over time. APIs changed their pricing. Storage costs evolved. Enterprise software became subscription-based.

Why would AI be any different?

What Happens If AI Gets Expensive?

Imagine a future where AI subscriptions become significantly more expensive.

Instead of giving every developer unlimited access, companies may start controlling usage.

  • Monthly token limits.
  • Restricted premium model access.
  • AI used only for high-value tasks.
  • Developers expected to solve more problems independently.

At that point, businesses will begin asking an important question:

“If the AI costs more than hiring another junior developer… does unlimited AI usage still make business sense?”

No one knows if this will happen.

But it’s a possibility worth thinking about.

The Bigger Concern

My biggest concern isn’t AI.

It’s dependency.

I’ve noticed an increasing number of developers who rarely write code without an AI assistant.

Some struggle to debug manually.

Some can’t explain why the generated solution actually works.

Some simply copy, paste, and move on.

AI is an incredible productivity tool.

But productivity is not the same as understanding.

The Developers Who Will Thrive

I don’t believe AI will replace great engineers.

I believe it will make great engineers even more valuable.

The best developers will continue to:

  • Understand architecture.
  • Solve business problems.
  • Design scalable systems.
  • Debug complex issues.
  • Know when AI is wrong.

AI becomes a multiplier—not a replacement.

The Same Lesson Applies to Businesses

This isn’t just about developers.

It’s about businesses too.

The companies that benefit the most from AI won’t necessarily be the ones using the most AI.

They’ll be the ones applying technology to solve real operational problems.

Sometimes that’s AI automation.

Sometimes it’s a custom SaaS platform.

Sometimes it’s integrating multiple business systems so data flows automatically instead of manually.

The goal isn’t to chase every new tool.

The goal is to remove friction from the business.

Our Perspective

At Walking Dreamz Technologies, we don’t start conversations by asking, “How can we add AI?”

We start by asking:

“What business problem are we trying to solve?”

Over the past 15 years, we’ve delivered more than 300 projects with a team of 20+ developers.

Some projects required AI-powered automation.

Others needed custom SaaS platforms, scalable backend systems, or complex integrations between multiple applications.

The technology changes.

The objective never does.

Build systems that genuinely help businesses grow.

Final Thoughts

The future will continue to evolve, just as it always has.

The developers who keep learning fundamentals—and the businesses that focus on solving real problems instead of chasing trends—will always stay ahead.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Do you believe AI will make developers less valuable, or will it make strong engineering fundamentals even more important?
